Timpani and Percussion Section Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest, as the official Dutch name is, has two Solo Timpanists. Nick Woud and Tomohiro Ando both share the Solo Timpani position. Nick Woud studied with Jan Labordus of the RCO in the Amsterdam tradition and Tomohiro Ando came from far Japan, mesmerized by this tradition, to study with Nick. Both players add in their own way to the development of the Amsterdam School of Timpani. The instruments used in the RCO are mainly two sets of Adams/Schnellars, a set of original Schnellars, a pair of brass Van der Hoeks and a score of other vintage drums, all with calfheads.

Both past and present of the Royal Concertgebouw section are documented on the Timpani and Percussion Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Facebook page.

The Percussion Section consists of three soloplayers: Mark Braafhart, Herman Rieken and Bence Major, all educated in the Amsterdam tradition. Here a nice picture with our former Solotimpanist Marinus Komst.
